Bridges for standard protocols

WAN connections differ from direct connections (for example, via the LANCAPI) in that the data in the WAN are transmitted via standardized network protocols that are also used in the LAN. Direct connections, on the other hand, use proprietary methods that are specifically designed for point-to-point connections.

WAN connections act to extend a LAN, while direct connections merely connect one individual PC to another PC. WAN connections form bridges for the communication between networks (or for connecting individual computers to the LAN).
